This game puts you in charge of army units and let’s you relive some of the most famous historical battle’s from the time of regimental warfare. It is a real time strategy game where combat happens in real time without taking turns. This type of wargame started with Sid Meier’s Gettysburg in 1997, which introduced a new way of playing wargames by removing the old hex grids and dice rolls. Instead, you control units on a 3D battlefield and move them as battles happen live.
You could pause the game if needed, but there were no breaks or turns. This game also had a multiplayer feature thats still used today. Later, in 1998, Sid Meier’s Antietam came out, offering new battles and tricky terrain around Sharpsburg. In 2001, the game engine moved to the Napoleonic Wars with the release of Waterloo: Napoleon’s Last Battle, followed by Austerlitz: Napoleon’s Greatest Victory in 2002.
In 2005, a new era of black powder combat games started with Civil War: Bull Run by Mad Minute Games. Their next game was Take Command: 2nd Manassas in 2006, which included more famous battles like Cedar Mountain and Chantilly.
